Social Marketing Theory

Social marketing theory is really quite simple. All these marketing agencies and advertisers are trying to tell you that it’s big job and it costs lots and lots of money. The truth of the matter is that social marketing is about making friends. As simple as that.

What happens when you over complicate social marketing is you start to make people mad. Before long they’ll unfollow you or unfriend you because you doing nothing but try to sell to them. If you’re looking for mass subscriptions, people blasts, mass friend finding, or anything other than opt in e-mail marketing, you’re approaching social media the wrong way.

The idea behind social marketing is really threefold:

Find people like you with same interests Form relationships with those people Treat everyone with respect Now notice where marketing comes in to that equation? It doesn’t.

Social marketing theory is about being a better friend and forming better relationships than anyone else. What happens when you form good relationships is those people buy from you, refer you, and send all of their friends to do business with you.

In fact, I like to think of social media as the world’s simplest opt-in service. Rather than double opt-in and open up e-mail clients, all people have to do is press one button to follow you or send a friend request. Now, they’ve entered your thought stream. They can see everything that you post to the rest of your fans.

So for everybody out there trying to build an e-mail marketing list, realize that social media is really just the first step. If they start to follow you and realize you’re an expert, then they’re going to start to pay attention. Now I’m not saying you can never market is people in social media, but do it sparingly. The ratio should be about 5 to 1. Five non-marketing messages to one marketing message.

Really social marketing theory is that simple. Be a good friend, treat people well, be interested, and gain a following like no other (except maybe Tony Robbins).

Social Media Marketing – Do You Know the 3 Differences Between Social Media & Traditional Marketing?

OK, tell the truth, what is the first thought that enters your mind when I say the word marketing? I’ll bet if you are honest you will say something like “used car salesman”. Most of us have this negative picture about marketing that conjures up words like shyster and charlatan maybe even snake oil salesman. If the truth be told none of us like the thought of being “sold”.

It’s not really fair you know because without marketing no one would ever know where to get the products and services they need. Even more important than that, there are lots of things you wouldn’t even know existed without marketing. Now it could be argued that we need a lot less stuff anyway but that is a whole other conversation. So in order to “sell” our products and services on the social networks without offending our readers or prospects we need to learn how it is different than traditional marketing.

The first difference in social media marketing is you must develop a relationship with your prospects before you do anything else. You must be willing to spend the time it takes to get to know them and what they want. Then you must provide authentic, valuable, and timely information. The more you give in the beginning the more benefits you will reap in the end.

What I love about Social Media from a consumer’s point of view is that the tables are turned. The second difference in social media marketing is the consumer is in control. In traditional marketing the marketers hold all the cards. They have a captured audience like on TV or radio with commercials or in magazines and on billboards. We may try not to pay attention but a certain amount still leaks through. For the most part we resent the intrusion.

On the social networks the consumer votes for the businesses who provide the most relevant and useful information. There are many ways to vote such as answering a blog post, or using social bookmarking, or by clicking on a link, or joining in surveys, or by re-Tweeting a post, or commenting on Facebook or by viewing and voting on a You Tube video. The most important way to vote, of course, is by doing business with the person providing the information.

The final difference is you must learn is, don’t spend too much time with sales talk or promotion on the social networks. The unwritten rule is about 80%- 90% relevant information and then 10% – 20% promotional material on the social networking sites. I think you will discover that the people with the most followers are the ones that provide the most relevant and useful information for free. Of course it is still up to you to consider the source and research what you are given.

In our world, which has become increasingly more complicated, more rushed, and where everyone is much more isolated, it make perfect sense to me that the newest trend in marketing is the old fashion word of mouth marketing which has always been the most effective anyway.

Social Marketing Principle – Value Before Return

Posted on 20th November 2009 by admin in social marketing

Learning the skills of social marketing is an important tool in your network marketing business. When you work for someone else, much of that is done for you. However, when you have your own network marketing business or any home based business for that matter, the challenge of meeting those social marketing needs will be all yours. Building your business with social marketing is more than just learning how to deal with people. It is a process of learning to offer value before expecting something in return.

Until recently, a traditional network marketing business was built by following leads, finding prospects, cold calling, doing follow up visits and pretty much anything else your upline suggested. Most home businesses are built much the same. For your business to succeed you need to have a source of contacts. Finding that source is extremely time consuming.

Unfortunately, even if you do everything right – even if you invest hours upon hours promoting your business, your prospects are probably half-hearted at best. The average person can – with a click – access information that includes the negative as well as the positive. Much of this information is opinion based and not necessarily reliable – making it even more difficult to reach your target audience. Like everything else, technology is pushing for a change in how you build your business.

Now, I’m not saying the old business model doesn’t work anymore – because I know people who are still doing just fine with it. I’m saying that time is at a premium in today’s world. Have you noticed that families are noticeably busier than they were, say – even 20 years ago? There is so much competition in every area of family life that the average family simply doesn’t have any time left. They do, however, still need that extra income.

The most common option is still – to set up a home based business. With no travel time, they have the distinct advantage of being able to stay home where they can invest a few hours here and there. But, those few hours rarely show enough profit to make a difference. And who wants to add yet one more thing to an already packed schedule with little to show for it?

Ideally, they need a way to leverage their time by setting up a business using Social Marketing. I first learned about Social Marketing when I enrolled in Renegade University where I began learning about things like blogs, articles, journals, video, bookmarking and social sites. Another thing that was impressed upon us over and over again was this statement: Offer value first – before expecting anything in return.

I drove by a flower market on the way home today. On the large billboard outside, they announced the random name of one person from our community. Every week there is a new name drawn. That person only needed to stop by the store to receive a free dozen roses: no purchase, no entry, no strings attached. What a marketing plan! Give value before expecting anything in return. Do you think any of those people ever return to purchase flowers?

My husband has a piano business. Many times he has offered valuable information to someone looking to purchase a piano or offered his expert opinion on whether or not to fix or restore a piano. Do they always return to buy from him? Not always. But, he knows that he has offered them honest value up front. They are then free to consider the information and draw their own conclusions. Again: value before return.

That is the principle taught at Renegade University. Always offer value before expecting anything in return. Building your business on the internet with Social Marketing offers so much more than just business tools. It will teach you to offer what people want – and how they want it.

Social Marketing – How to Win in 2010 With These 5 Social Media Marketing Tools (I Use These Daily)

Posted on 2nd September 2009 by admin in social marketing

Social Marketing is here to stay, and will become even more important in 2010. Here are 5 Social Media Marketing sites that I use daily that will help you to “win in 2010.” You need to get a presence on all 5 of these now if you have not already done so.

In a minute I’m going to tell you a huge benefit of having a regular presence on all 5 of these sites, but first I’m going to share with you a few of the advantages of each site.

Twitter – Build a list on Twitter that is more responsive than your email list. Yes, you heard that right, more responsive than your email list. There are at least 2 reasons for this: 1) You bypass the spam filters of email programs and 2) you get immediate, as in within seconds, feedback on what you are offering, asking or saying. Do you get the power of that? Bypassing the spam filters and getting immediate feedback, just in case you missed it.

Facebook - Many online experts predict that a Facebook Fan Page will replace the standard email list by 2012. Think of it this way – if you sent 3 – 5 emails a day to your list, you would get unsubscribes in droves, right? But if you post 3 – 5 updates a day to your Facebook Fan Page you would not only get unsubscribes, your list would grow as your updates are seen by others in the stream of your fans.

YouTube – At the time of this writing, YouTube is getting twice the traffic of Google. Create a few slides in PowerPoint, use a Screen Capture tool like Camtasia, and talk about the information on the slides, upload it to YouTube and Boom! you’ve got a short little video featuring you and your expertise.

Your Blog – I think the coolest thing about a Blog is the ability to interact with those in your community. When you invite and encourage comments on your blog, you are inviting your tribe to share in the conversation. This builds so much “know, like and trust” and people do business with those they know like and trust.

EzineArticles – Not typically thought of as a Social Marketing tool, but it always has been for me. Upload a piece of your content and it can get syndicated all over the Internet. Plus you can invite your readers to comment on your articles, thus creating further conversation and connection.

Now here’s the really good news. Since you don’t have the budget of a Google or Yahoo, to plaster your name all over the Internet, it’s good that you don’t have to be found all over the internet. You just need to be found all over the internet in your niche, and when you have a regular presence on these 5 sites you will.

Practical Social Marketing – 3 Tips For Integrating Article Marketing Into Your Social Marketing

Posted on 19th May 2009 by admin in social marketing

, ,

Combining Article Marketing with Social Marketing is one of the best strategic moves you can make to build our online business. Article Marketing is alive and well and Social Marketing is so much more than a fad.

Before I show you three specific strategies for integrating these two powerful media, let’s get clear about this: Article Marketing IS a part of Social Marketing. Online marketers fail to realize this which results in the loss of traffic and profits.

Tip 1 – Automate – One of the best things about Social Marketing is the ability to automate much of what you do for “economy of action.” In other words, take one action and get several results. One of the best ways to do this is to set up your EzineArticles account to “auto-tweet” each of your newly published articles to Twitter. So each time you have a new article published the title and link is automatically announced on your Twitter page. Go to your Profile Manager and add your Twitter User Name and Password. You only have to do this once to set up automatic repurposing of your articles.

Tip 2 – Leveraging Twitter – After your article is automatically announced on Twitter, you’ll want to follow up with more announcements about your article. You can announce it yourself several times on the day it comes out. Ask “Have you seen this yet?” and include the title and link to your article. When you see discussions going on where your article could contribute to the conversation, include a link to your article. Take a quote from your article with good info and include the link so your prospect can read the rest of the article.

Tip 3 – Leveraging Facebook – You can and should promote your articles on Facebook, especially on your Facebook Fan Pages. You can announce that you are working on an article, then you can announce that you have submitted the article. This builds good anticipation for your article. Then you can announce that the article has been published and include the link.

Neat Bonus Tip – When promoting your article on your Facebook Fan Page, include the link to your article and a box will drop down that allows you to choose a graphic for your article, the title, the first few words, and the link for your article. Besides looking cool this increases the click thru rate from Facebook to your article.

Do You Know the Difference Between Social Networking, Social Media and Social Marketing?

Posted on 19th April 2009 by admin in social marketing

, ,

When I discuss social networking, social media, SEO, SEM and social marketing with small business owners for the first time, many are overwhelmed and confused about what they really are and how they impact their business. They know that they are all important, but not sure why. They know they need to establish an effective social web presence, but not sure how. If you feel similar frustration, let me share a little light on a couple of these subjects.

What is Social Media?

In a nut shell social media is content designed to be disseminated through social interaction, created using social tools such as social networks, business networks, forums, bookmarking, video sharing, etc. Social media are web-based technologies that transform traditional broadcast media monologues (one to many) into social media dialogues (many to many). It allows you to not just talk at your customer; it allows you to talk with and interact with your customer in a way that was never possible before.

What is Social Marketing?

Social Marketing is the actual marketing strategy and implementation of your efforts to effectively market yourself on the internet utilizing social media and social networks as well as related strategies that utilize SEO “Search Engine Optimization” and SEM “Search Engine Marketing/Monetization.”

Wikipedia describes social media marketing as:

“the act of using social networks, online communities, blogs, wikis or any other collaborative Internet form of media for marketing, sales, public relations and customer service. Common social media marketing tools include Twitter, blogs, LinkedIn, Facebook, Flickr and YouTube.”

Where I believe that most small business owners run into trouble is that they see the action side of social marketing and not the planning side of social marketing. The action side has two primary components:

Create traffic through videos, tweets, or even blog entries that attract attention, link energy, and become viral in nature. Traffic and link energy is the element that makes social marketing effective, it replicates a message not through purchase of an ad, but thorough user to user contact. Identify and connect with visitors and capture targeted connections, prospects and customers. Building a base for your brand or company to grow from.

Action for the sake of it is ineffective. Many company’s implement social media marketing campaigns because they either are told it is important or their competition is doing it. They jump in doing what they see and hear everyone else doing, accomplish nothing and become frustrated by the time and money that they have wasted.

Defining Your Small Business SMS “Social Marketing Strategy”

Before you jump into social marketing head first, you need to establish an effective SMS “Social Marketing Strategy” that will identify

What are your internet presence goals and objectives. (Develop a contact list, website monetization, marketing information, brand development) Who is your target connection and customer that you want to attract, identify and capture. What are the most effective social networks and media tools to reach your target and achieve your goals.

You can not be all things to all people. Only after you ask and answer the three questions above can you develop and implement an effective social media marketing campaign that will be successful and achieve your goals. Now you may have multiple plans, using multiple social resources, but the key is to always start with the SMS!

Social Media Marketing – Top Four Tips to Get Coaching Clients With Social Media Marketing

Posted on 7th March 2009 by admin in social marketing

, ,

Are you a coach interested in social media marketing? Have you been using social networking web sites, such as Facebook and Twitter for a while, but you haven’t gotten any coaching clients from them? The good news is that you can get coaching clients with social marketing, and it is not hard to do. Read this article for my four tips on getting coaching clients using web sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

Here are the top four tips for promoting your coaching business using social media marketing:

1. Define Your Social Media Marketing Goals.

Too many coaches jump into social marketing without a plan, without setting goals for the results they want to get from those web sites, and without creating systems in their business to support their marketing efforts.

Start by setting goals for your social marketing efforts – one of them should be building your list. Once you know what your goals are, it is going to be easier to see whether your social networking efforts are bringing in results.

2. Create Systems In Your Business To Support Your Social Media Efforts.

Even if you spend all of your time on social networking web sites, you are not going to get results unless you have systems in your business to support your social networking efforts and help you convert people you meet on social networking web sites into coaching clients.

Some of the systems you need include a way to invite people you meet on websites such as Facebook and Twitter to get a free gift from you and get on your list, a way to keep in touch with them and a way to convert them into coaching clients once they are on your list.

3. Network On A Regular Basis.

In order to get regular, consistent results from social media(such as more coaching clients), you must network on a regular basis. Share useful tips and ideas, share your blog posts, answer questions asked by your contacts.

Help others, and you will see that more and more people will be interested in what you have to say, and will join your list as a result.

4. Evaluate Your Social Media Efforts.

You will not know how well social media marketing is working for you unless you track your results. Evaluate your networking results on a regular basis to see what kind of results you are getting.

If you have several different social media sites, such as MySpace, Imeem, Friendster, etc., the trick is to get them to interact with one another. It is difficult sometimes to keep up with friends who may be on different sites. Or rather, it was difficult until Google Gadgets and Open Social started their own social media marketing toolset.

Open Social is one of the most exciting things to happen to Google in a long time. This will allow you to build applications that will link many different websites to one API and will also allow the system to host other social applications as well. You need to have a bit of JavaScript knowledge and HTML, but Google provides you the tutorials to do this in their Open Social guide online.

In addition to Open Social, you can also use Google Gadgets to keep your marketing linked to your social networking sites. Google Gadgets can enable you to build a social application very inexpensively. If you are looking for a way to use social media as a marketing tool, Open Social and Google Gadgets are just the thing to help you achieve success.

Google Gadgets are bits of code that you can structure to your own website and use in links and signatures all over the internet. You can post links in many different places as your signature code. If your gadgets are created for your website, they will update as your website updates. One gadget can be put on all of your social networks to continually reflect changes in your website so that you do not have to do this by hand.

And by combining Google Gadgets with Open Social, you can use Social Marketing to its ultimate success. You can actually use one gadget that can virally spread across all of your different social networks through the Open Social application. This saves you time that can be spent taking care of business.

Combining Google Gadgets with Open Social, which has just become available to the public, is the best way to connect all of your social media sites together and keep them updated and connected to your website through a gadget.

Social media attracts billions of customers yearly. Years ago, the only social networking site was MySpace and a few others. Today, there are hundreds of different sites and more developing each day. Imagine being able to spread your marketing ideas across these different websites with one click of the mouse! Thanks to this new Google Technology, you can save a lot of time and reach a lot more potential customers on social sites by using Open Social. Social Marketing For Free Network Marketing Business Leads and Traffic

Posted on 19th October 2008 by admin in social marketing

, ,

Everyone wants something for nothing. It’s true. In a Network Marketing business, it is no different. Why is it, then, that we still think we have to pay out loads of money, particularly when it comes to business leads, to make money? Well, there are a lot of business opportunities out there that would like you to think you must pay to play. You can get plenty of things for free if you just take the time to look around.

We all want to believe that because we think our Network Marketing opportunity is great, so will everyone else that sees it. That belief alone will not help us generate Network Marketing business leads. That still doesn’t mean we can’t learn how to market our Network Marketing opportunity for free. That reminds me…your prospects have to be able to find you on the Internet in order to become your business leads!

So, before I get off on a tangent, I want to state that you CAN expect to get tons of business leads and traffic to find you on the Internet, without spending any money at all!

Start Getting Free Business Leads with Social Marketing.

Social Marketing is a form of Internet marketing that attempts to reach marketing goals by communication and participation in various Social Media markets such as MySpace,Facebook, YouTube; and bookmarking sites like Digg, StumbleUpon, Squidoo, and others, like Blogs.

What this means is that you can change the way you obtain business leads for your Network Marketing business opportunity, and remove some stress from your life. Be more social; take time to learn new Internet Network Marketing training concepts, and spend less money by learning free methods of attracting business leads to you, instead of paying for them, or hounding them. Think about what a unique tool this could be for your Network Marketing business!

How to start Attracting Free Business Leads:

By using Social Marketing methods, and socializing on social media sites to attract leads to you instead in hunting for them, you can enter the Social Media Sites and set up house with this new Internet Network Marketing style. This is a form of Attraction Marketing, which is the practice of attracting pre-qualified prospects, or business leads, to find what it is that you are offering on the Internet. So get started on setting up some new social marketing sites and make some friends! Try those listed above, or there are tons of other sites to choose from.

How Does Social Marketing Bring You Business Leads?

Just think of the extremely successful people you know in Network Marketing…what is different about them? In most cases, they are extremely likable and charismatic; some may say…lucky. People are drawn to them like a moth to a flame. Business leads just seem to appear. I think that’s the key…business leads come to them! They’ve established themselves as a “likable leader”. I doubt they chase any prospects, or pay for them.

That’s the way I want you to think…that success comes easily to you by just being yourself. You are already a leader. Your prospects just need to know “who” you are…without your “sales hat” on. You can do all this with Social Marketing; on sites like FaceBook, MySpace, YouTube, StumbleUpon, and others. Work on being a friend and sharing your knowledge, but in a giving way, and not selling. People usually do business with people they like and trust. Business leads will be attracted to you! Doesn’t that sound a lot less stressful? And, it doesn’t cost you a dime!

Next: To learn techniques on how these Social Media sites work best for business and Internet Marketing, just search the Internet for free training on Internet Network Marketing. You can find valuable training information at a support site for Internet Network Marketing trainees. I found that I really needed this type of support to keep my training on track when I was just starting out as an Internet Marketing Coach.

You can quickly learn how to set up these sites correctly and then learn how to get business leads and traffic to find your sites without sending unsolicited network marketing information. You can find tons of free Internet Network Marketing training on how to learn Social Marketing in order to help prospects, or business leads, find you and your business opportunity.

Once these wonderful, free business leads start coming to you, you must have a way to find out who’s interested in what you are offering. You need to have a “lead capture page” in place in order to capture the information of those who have “asked” for more information, or to be kept informed. After all those years of verbally bludgeoning people over the head to pay attention to your network marketing business opportunity, they simply ask to be associated with you, the leader! It’s a beautiful thing! I initially joined a free Internet Marketing training class to help me set it all up.

Last: There are Internet Network Marketing coaches out there, like myself, that enjoy teaching how to successfully bring in free business leads for your Network Marketing business. We are all beginners at some point, in something. And, it’s much easier to learn from someone willing to share what they’ve learned, than to stumble around and learn everything the hard way. I have plenty of my own examples to share about that subject!

Just remember the principles about being yourself, having fun, making friends, and presenting your Network Marketing business opportunity in a giving and “Attractive Marketing” manner. And don’t forget the Golden Rule, “Treat Others as You would Like to be Treated”.
